Compressed models are NOT miniature versions of large models

Large neural models are often compressed before deployment. Model compression is necessary for many practical reasons, such as inference latency, memory footprint, and energy consumption. Compressed models are assumed to be miniature versions of corresponding large neural models. However, we question this belief in our work. We compare compressed models with corresponding large neural models using four model characteristics: prediction errors, data representation, data distribution, and vulnerability to adversarial attack. We perform experiments using the BERT-large model and its five compressed versions. For all four model characteristics, compressed models significantly differ from the BERT-large model. Even among compressed models, they differ from each other on all four model characteristics. Apart from the expected loss in model performance, there are major side effects of using compressed models to replace large neural models.

The popular show'Black Mirror' may be on hold due to the pandemic spreading across the globe, but fans of the dystopian world can create a part of the sci-fi series on their own. A Stanford student built a robot dog similar to that used in the episode titled'Metalhead' that hunts and kills humans in an apocalyptic setting. The miniature version, called the Stanford Pupper, was developed using a 3D printer, a PlayStation controller and other common pieces - and the team has shared all the details for the public to use. It has 12 degrees of freedom, meaning it can goes backwards, forwards, side-to-side and also features a'sneaky mode' that mimics the movement of a real canine creeping on the floor. Sony announces PlayStation One Classic that comes pre-loaded with 20 games

Sony has unveiled a shrunken version of its classic Playstation One video games console that comes pre-loaded with 20 classic titles. The £90 ($100) PlayStation One Classic is almost half the size of Sony's original 1994 console, making it small enough to hold in one hand. It is available for pre-order now ahead of its release on December 3 – exactly 24 years after the original release date for the console. Sony is following in the footsteps of fellow Japanese games-maker Nintendo, which has released miniature versions of two of its classic consoles in recent years. The nostalgic re-issues of the classic consoles have been hugely popular amongst Nintendo fans, with the most recent SNES Classic Mini has sold 5.28 million units worldwide since its launch in September 2017.

You can now transform your Segway into a steerable go-kart. Ninebot, the parent company of Segway, is expected to roll out a kit that attaches to its hoverboard model, the miniPro, according to Abacus News, which spotted the report on Chinese news site Weibo. You can now transform your Segway into a steerable go-kart. The miniPro is a miniature version of the original, upright Segway, that's similar to a hoverboard, but adds a padded steering stick in the middle of the device to allow for easier maneuvering. Segway first revealed the miniPro in 2016, but now appears to opening it up for new modes of transportation.


Scientists find a miniature version of our solar system, with eight planets and a sun-like star

Scientists applying artificial intelligence to data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope have discovered an eighth planet around the star Kepler-90 -- breaking the record for the star with the most exoplanets and, for the first time, tying with our own. The planet Kepler-90i, described at a briefing Thursday and in a paper accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, demonstrates for the first time that other stars can host planetary systems as populous as our own solar system. The findings also establish the growing role that neural networks and other machine learning techniques could play in the hunt for more elusive planets outside our own solar neighborhood. "Kepler has already shown us that most stars have planets," said Paul Hertz, director of NASA's Astrophysics Division in Washington. "Today Kepler confirms that stars can have large families of planets just like our solar system." Kepler-90i sits around a sun-like star 2,545 light years away in the constellation Draco.
